Where the Animals are: Mapping livestock and disease risk

For millions of families, chickens, pigs, and livestock are part of everyday life, but living closely with animals can also increase exposure to diseases that spread between animals and people. Using data from 5.3 million households across 96 countries, we mapped where poultry, swine, and ruminant ownership is most common, creating new spatial data to help researchers better understand zoonotic disease risk.

Building for health: mapping the materials that make our homes and stop disease

The materials and techniques used to build houses impact a family's risk of contracting infections, particularly in tropical and rural regions of the world where contagious diseases like malaria and dengue circulate. We've created a tool to predict housing quality and assess how local infrastructure affects the health risks residents face.

Our Shigella-laden world: Mapping the transmission of a deadly bacteria

You may not have heard much about the bacteria Shigella, but it kills more than 200,000 people around the world each year. There’s a vaccine on the way, but in the meantime, we’ve been mapping out the riskiest hotspot, based on the environmental conditions that this bug likes most.

Weathering the pandemic: How the weather affected COVID-19 in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru

The effects of climate and the environment on viruses like SARS-CoV-2 are not well understood. This study combined high-resolution data on COVID-19 cases with meteorological, population, policy and other variables in three South American countries. This revealed that low humidity increased, and high solar radiation decreased SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

The complexities of climate: How the bugs that make kids sick respond to the weather.

Climate change could be reshaping the pathogen profile of diarrheal disease.
